THE TIME OF THE PETARDS PASSED ME

For many years now, some acquaintances of mine have been thinking of making their own firecrackers to explode at Christmas and for this they have contacted a pyrotechnic wick company which is what it would cost them the most to get. Personally, I don’t see that it’s too safe to make your own firecrackers. For many years they were going to buy them in Portugal because there they could access a greater number of firecrackers and a little more powerful than the firecrackers that are sold in our area.

I haven’t fired a firecracker for about twenty years, but it’s not something I think about too much either. I think the firecrackers are for children to play a bit to make noise, but not for adults to spend the day bothering the neighborhood, which is what they really do.

When we were kids, a friend of mine from school and I loved to shoot firecrackers and we also looked for places to blow things up without disturbing the neighbors too much, since we were looking for places where there were almost no houses.

The quintessential day to shoot firecrackers is New Year’s Eve, in which many people lose their minds by throwing firecrackers through the windows of their houses. At that time you cannot go down the street, mainly for safety reasons, and you have to wait a little while after midnight to be able to leave the house. And when it is time to go out, you realize the smell of gunpowder in the environment. Luckily, the firecrackers’ time lasts a short time, but seeing the queues in the best-known firecracker shop in the city, it seems to me a very short time how long the firecrackers last and they are also quite expensive. To this day, I don’t think I will ever spend a single euro to buy more firecrackers, since I neither have the desire to throw them out nor the desire to spend the money on something that lasts almost no time at all and is enjoyed very little.
